More Than Food: Sharing God’s Compassion

A reflection from serving at our church food pantry

Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to serve at our church’s food pantry.

At first, I thought we were simply there to distribute food — to prepare boxes, hand them out, and make sure everyone received what they needed.

But that day, something touched my heart in a deeper way.

During the distribution, I made a mistake. It reminded me that serving is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about being present, being willing to serve, and remembering why we are there.

As people came through the pantry, we had the opportunity not only to give them food, but also to talk with them, listen to them, and pray with them.

And I began to see the food pantry differently.

We were not just giving out food. We were sharing God’s love and compassion.

The food may meet a physical need for a day or a few days. But a prayer, a kind word, a listening ear, or a reminder that someone is not forgotten can touch a much deeper place in a person’s heart.

On Sunday, during our church service, I had the opportunity to share what I had experienced.

I shared that sometimes we may think we are simply handing someone a bag of groceries. But God can use something as simple as that moment to remind someone:

You are seen.
You are loved.
You are not forgotten.

That experience also reminded me of something I want to carry into my everyday life — and into Light of Christ Shop.

It is easy to think that what we do is simply about products: a piece of jadeite, a gemstone, a Bible cover, a cross, or a meaningful gift.

But behind every meaningful gift, there can be something more.

A reminder of faith.
A message of love.
A little encouragement.
A small light in someone’s day.

We may not always know what someone is going through when they visit our store, receive a gift, or simply come across something that speaks to their heart.

But we can choose to create and share things with love, care, and purpose.

Because sometimes, what looks like a simple act of giving can become something much greater.

We are not just giving something.
We are sharing love.
We are sharing hope.
We are sharing compassion.
We are sharing a little light.

And that is what I hope Light of Christ can continue to be.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

May we never underestimate what God can do through a simple act of love and compassion.
